RAF
Hunter F.1 WT629/T DFLS   Pilot ejected safely at 4,000 ft Martin-Baker

One of eight aircraft which had completed a 4x4 dogfighting exercise at 45,000ft. The weather at base, West Raynham, had deteriorated and Hunters diverted to Marham. They descended over West Raynham in 4 pairs to make visual approaches to Marham, making GCA talk down essential. But Marham GCA had difficulties picking up the four sections, all of which were then down to 10 minutes fuel and there was R/T congestion. In all the confusion all four sections tried to get below the clouds and find the airfield but only two landed safely. Pilot of WT629 descended to 600ft but was unable to see the ground. He then climbed to 4,000ft and ejected safely. His aircraft crashing in a field 2 miles north-west of Swaffham, Norfolk.

FEEDBACK

I have just found your website and see that the information on a 41 squadron meteor 8 that went down on

13 October 56 lacks some detail.

I was on duty that day in station flight, the Meteor being part of the aircraft allocated as general hacks --41 were flying Hunter 5's

The pilot was flying officer Roger Coulson -Coulsdon [surname spelling may be incorrect]

Earlier during the summer Roger C had been on a fizzer for performing a high speed low pass in a Hunter over Brighton Beach -the aircraft number was reported etc etc.

That October weekend RC was allowed back in the air and an aircraft was prepared -- however  another Meteor 8 booked to go the Paris with drop tanks fitted failed its pre flight tank drop test

The tanks were changed to our other Meteor the aircraft departed ----WA 855 was the aircraft that failed the drop test that morning --.fit to fly without tanks.

RC arrived and I escorted him for normal despatch --- aircraft would not start -- new battery trolley connected --still non starter -- RC asked if I would Thump the "third relay". from memory this was in the upper part of the wheel bay, being tall this was feasible but officially not allowed as a wet start was likely-- we talked about this -- he explained he wanted back in the air so I "thumped it" she started -- no significant flames from either engine.

Approx 60 + minutes later around 3 pm we were informed that he was down -- I volunteered for crash crew duty and found that RC had gone into a corner of the Murphy Richards sports ground in Footscray on the outer edge of Orpington

We were told " that the mass balance weights in the tail had broken loose, the aircraft could not be trimmed-- he did eject but to avoid the possibility of the aircraft going into Orpington high street [it was a Saturday afternoon] had pointed the nose into a field -- the sports ground we were in, and ejected out at an angle

The drogue had not pulled him out of the seat due to the low level and he landed in the seat but still alive  -- later we were told he and the seat were dragged off of a lawn and this move caused a blood clot that was the reason for his death later that Saturday night"  I cannot of course say any of this is fact.

I attended the funeral in the church in Biggin -- but have never been back since

You may guess this event has not lived easily with me over the years -- very much a "if only I had not" syndrome.

I would like to think that what ever information you place from this, on your site--- it is a small tribute to a very nice individual --

even if he did fly fast and low perhaps more than once  "that's what a fighter pilot trained to do".

I too went up on a seat it was fired up a static ramp but I cannot remember why or where, or when - except it would have been between 1954 and 58

later I had back traction the rack type  -- and still backache I think I was too tall being over 6ft

Kind regards

 Gerald "Geoff" Bailey
