Assisted Aircrew Escape Systems for "Space Pilots"

 
Returning to Earth after their orbital missions the Russian landings were over land and the sudden impact with the ground was thought to be too risky so the first six Soviet Cosmonauts  ejected from their space capsule and descended by parachute. The American Astronauts  splashed down into the ocean and remained inside their capsules.
